In January, Texas-based energy investor Rockland Capital closed its debut institutional fund on $333 million, after being in market for more than two years. The firm generally targets power plants that it believes can be operated more efficiently.

“We understood that there was a fair amount of risk in raising a first-time fund, and that many first-time funds don’t ever get raised,” says Rockland partner Shane Litts. “There are a lot of LPs that just won’t consider you because you’re a first-time fund.”

Prior to Rockland’s first institutional fund, the firm operated a “pledge fund”, investing on a deal-by-deal basis. All six investors that participated in the firm’s pledge fund committed to Rockland’s debut institutional vehicle, which altogether had roughly 30 limited partners.

Rockland’s first investment from its debut fund was for an interest in California’s La Paloma Generating Plant.

Charles Bartz joined Berchwood Partners in 2009. He has 30 years of experience in institutional investments and has focused on alternative investments over the last 13 years, working with a broad range of domestic and international investment strategies and products, including private equity/buyouts, venture capital, mezzanine, distressed debt, infrastructure and real estate.

Prior to joining Berchwood, he was responsible for the oversight of new business/origination efforts as well as the management of legal, compliance and finance functions at C.P. Eaton Partners. Prior to that, he served as the lead pension investment officer at The Pillsbury Company and Continental Can Company and then moved to a marketing role, representing a variety of international and domestic products, at Posthorn Global Asset Management, Creditanstalt Global Asset Management and Washington Square Capital.

Charles received his BA from Macalester College, his JD from William Mitchell College of Law, and his MBA from the University of St. Thomas. He has obtained his series 7, 63, and 24 licenses, and is registered with the Financial Services Authority.

David W. Berchenbriter co-founded BerchWood Partners in 2000. He has over 29 years of global marketing and fundraising experience and has worked with funds specializing in buyout and acquisition, restructuring/distressed debt, mezzanine, venture capital and real estate. Prior to forming BerchWood, he was a partner with C.P. Eaton Partners. Prior to that, David worked at Amerindo Investment Advisors as Director of Marketing and New Product Development. David was a co-founder of Devon Capital Management and has worked with Sentinel Real Estate Corporation and Smith Barney. From 1976 – 1979, he was a Peace Corps volunteer in Colombia.

David received his BBA in economics from the University of Iowa and has his Series 7, 24, 27, 63 and 79 licenses.

Bill Zwart has 33 years of experience in law, government, public policy, and communications. Before joining BerchWood in 2001, Bill was the operations director at Friends of CUNY, a not-for-profit advocacy group, for two years. Before that he worked for the New York State Senate for six years as legislative counsel and chief of staff to Hon. Franz S. Leichter. Prior to that he worked at the Minnesota Bankers Association as associate counsel; at the Metropolitan Transportation Commission as general counsel, and at the Minnesota State Senate as counsel to Commerce Committee.

Bill received a BA in journalism and political science from the University of Minnesota and a JD from William Mitchell College of Law. He is admitted to practice law in New York and Minnesota and has obtained his Series 7, 24, 63 and 79 licenses.
